Welcome to the

USAPL Texas Website

June 6, 2009

Hi everyone,

Christy Newman (USAPL Texas State Chair) has created a membership survey for the members of USAPL Texas to fill out. The survey covers many of the issues that will be addressed at the 2009 USAPL National Governing Body (NGB) meeting on June 11, 2009. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey. Your feedback will be used to help determine how she will vote on the various motions, elections, honorary awards, and national meet bids.

Hi Everyone, The USAPL Texas State Meet went off without a hitch...as if one of Johnny Graham's meets would ever dare to have a hitch:) As soon as he sends me the results I'll get them posted here on the website, as well as get all the records updated.

We had State Chair elections at the meet and I am proud to announce that Christy Newman is your new State Chair. I've been your state chair for about a decade or so and I have had a fun time keeping everyone up to date via the web and seeing everyone at the meets. I'll still be around at the meets so you can't get rid of me that easy! Christy has alot of ideas on the promotion of powerlifting and USAPL Texas, so get ready (you can't say you weren't warned)!! I'm looking forward to her leadership!

UT-Austin is ramping up my duties and the Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports is opening this fall (we're moving offices into the new facility in a couple of weeks) so I will be very busy with the other side of my life for a while. For more info check out the facility webpage by clicking on the above link. Powerlifting will play a part in some of the displays when we finally get the museum side of the facility open in the fall so everyone should check it out and plan a visit. Maybe by the time the Longhorn Open gets here it will be open - only time will tell, but I sure hope so!

One more thing and most important, Tony Cardella has just alerted me to the fact that he has been asked at the last minute to direct a powerlifting meet in Conroe, Texas in mid July. Apparently, the guy who was going to do it, no long is, for one reason or another. Therefore, the USAPL has a chance to get their foot in the door by conducting a new meet in a new market; I think it may be in conjunction with a bodybuilding meet. The meet entry form is already up in the Coming Events section or just click on Lone Star State Open 2009 and you'll get to the entry form. Stay strong,

Kim

May 12, 2009

Hi Everyone, Christy Newman and Tony Cardella just sent me a sanction form for their Summer Power Fest in Houston in August. I've got the entry form up in the Coming Events section or just click on the meet name and you'll get to the entry form. Stay strong,

Kim

May 8, 2009

Hi Everyone, Christy Newman has asked to put her name in the mix for the State Chair elections. Anyone else? I'll have the ballots ready at the meet next Saturday. Stay strong,

Kim

April 27, 2009

Hi Everyone, Johnny's meet is just around the corner so hopefully you have your entries already submitted. I wanted to remind everyone that this year is an election year for the State Chairperson position. I will continue to serve as long as you want me to, but anyone who would like to submit their name into the cause just send me a quick note so I can get some voting forms ready for the meet. Also, for those of you patiently waiting on your state record to be posted, I am waiting on TAMU to submit their results to me (they must have the wrong e-mail address). Stay strong,

Kim

April 1, 2009

I just uploaded the entry form for Johnny Graham's Texas State Meet next month.  You can either get it in the Upcoming Events area or simply click here.  The USAPL Collegiate National Meet just occurred in Baton Rouge, LA last weekend.  Check out the results on the national website for the results.  Many Texas collegians performed admirably  at the meet!  The USAPL High School National Meet is in Killeen this coming weekend.  If you have some free time come see the future of USAPL lifting.  Also, it is a little ahead of time, but I was just advised that UT Football will be having a home game the Saturday before Thanksgiving this year (this is the first time this has happened in a long time), therefore the Longhorn Open will have to be two Saturdays before Thanksgiving.  Apparently, the 2008 Longhorn Open was just a trial run for this occurence. Stay strong,

Kim

February 11, 2009

The Aggie Invitaional is two weeks away so hopefully you have your entry form in the mail! On another note, I have received a survey from Angela Simons who is the USAPL National Chairperson for the Raw Committee. The national office is seeking more information from the USAPL membership concerning what kinds of equipment to allow or not allow in raw competition. Please download the survey, fill it out on your computer (it's a Word document and only 2-3 questions), save it to your desktop or documents folder, and then attach it to an e-mail back to me at. The sooner you complete and return the document the better, but you have until June 1 to have a say in the definition of raw lifting in the US..

Stay Strong,
Kim

January 21, 2009

Another year is off to a good start!  Johnny Graham hosted a last minute High School Qualifier meet a couple of weeks ago and UT had their first Rookie Meet! I have just uploaded Texas A&M University's entry form, so either visit the Coming Events page, or just click Entry Form here.  This is the Word document form.  A pdf form is in the Coming Events area.  We hope to see you at the Aggie Invitational or the Texas State Meet in May.

Stay Strong,
Kim

December 3, 2008
The 2008 Longhorn Open is finished and in the books for another year.  We ended up having 28 women, 84 men, and additional 5 bench only entrants for a grand total of 117 lifters.  Barring the seemingly normal computer problems at the beginning and end of the competition it was a successful meet.  I hope everyone had fun.  I've finally uploaded the results for the 2008 Longhorn Open.  I am currently trying to get all the new state records updated.  We have a good crop of young and talented lifters being introduced to the sport via the Raw division as witnessed by the number of Raw records set at the meet so keep up the good work and keep on recruiting!  Stay strong!

Kim

The Longhorn Open entry form is now online.  As an experiment, if you are a USAPL member and you download the entry form please send me an quick e-mail (just put your name in the body of the e-mail that pops up with a click on the link, the rest should be filled in for you),  indicating you've got a copy and I don't need to snail mail you one.  This will allow us to save paper, envelopes, and stamps!  Thanks.  August 22, 2008

Well the weird has finally happened. I just found out today that the UT facility reservation paperwork, which was turned in in April 2008, had different dates on it than what we normally want to reserve for our Longhorn Open.  We can't change the dates since another group has already put in their request, so the Longhorn Open will now be on November 15 - the Saturday before "the Saturday before Thanksgiving"!!!  We are extremely sorry for any inconveniences this may cause our lifters.  We'll try to get it back on the normal weekend next year.  As soon as school begins next week and the Longhorn PL club returns to campus we'll get the entry forms in the mail.  I'll try to get the sanction form in the mail and an electronic version of the entry form online this weekend since the dates have been approved through UT.  Please help to spread the news.

Stay Strong! Kim

August 14, 2008

I just posted the records set at the Summer PowerFest!. Enjoy! Stay Strong!  Kim

August 11, 2008

I have posted the results for the 2008 Summer PowerFest directed by Tony Cardella and Kristy Newman.  It appears they had a good turn out.  I have been getting a few requests for information about the Longhorn Open.  The date will be November 22, 2008 - the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  We will send out entry forms and get them online as soon as UT gives us the official OK on the facility reservation (early-mid September, usually).  Stay strong! Kim

June 5, 2008
The results for the Texas State Meet have been posted and the records updated so check them out! Also, Johnny Graham is hosting the Men's Nationals in Killeen next weekend - June 13-15 - so come and support the organization, as well as see some top-notch lifting. Many top Texas lifters will be giving it their best efforts: Tony Cardella, Wade Hooper, David Hammers, Ennis White, Austin Smith, Greg Stein, Travis Arbuckle, Josh Norton, Caleb Messinger, Ian Bell, Eric Calloway, Ian Madison, and Shawn Frasquillo to name just a few. Stay Strong! Kim

May 15, 2008
On a good note: Tony Cardella and Christy Newman have submitted their sanction form to host the 2008 Summer PowerFest in Houston, TX on August 2. Their entry form is online in the Coming Events section. Johnny Graham will also be submitting a sanction form for the 2009 Texas State Meet to be held in Killeen, TX so keep your eyes open for the entry form. On a very sad note: The Sam Houston State University Powerlifting club experienced a tragedy last week. One of their lifters, Alyssa Lamp, was killed in an auto accident, while another lifter Kyle Kloc suffered serious injuries in the same accident. Please keep the families and friends of these lifters in your thoughts and prayers as they move forward in these troubled times. Stay Strong! Kim

November 26, 2007
The results for the Longhorn Open are posted here and/or in the Results section. We had a great meet! 129 lifters, 2 platforms, and done lifting by 7pm. The meet wouldn't be possible without the numerous hours put in by the UT Longhorn Powerlifting Team so I want to thank them personally for all their hard work. Stay Strong! Kim

November 7, 2007
After the dust settled it appears the Longhorn Open will have approximately 125 full-meet lifters and 10 bench-only folks. Unfortunately, I have had to turn over a dozen people away. If you do not find your name on this list, then check your e-mail. I sent a message yesterday to those lifters I couldn't accept. The final names on my list include: William Young, Doug Waterman, Jeff Ross, Colton Dipple, Hiawatha Nash, Alex Saez, Scott Smith, Jose Vicente Armendariz-Calvo, Justin Hopkins, Robert Elrod, Chris Powell, Alex Alaniz, Micah Ruby, Aaron Rosalez, Dylan Braudaway, Yolanda Beasley, Sauzi Hernandez, and Melanie Laney. I have not listed individuals from TAMU, SHSU, UTSA, Ft. Hood, Edna High School, and possibly a few more such groups/teams.

The tentative flight breakdowns look like the following:
Platform 1
Flight A - Women 97-132 (14 full meet + 1 bench only)
Flight B - Women 148-181 (15 full meet)
Flight C - Women 198-SHW & Men 114-132 (13 full meet)
Flight D - Men 148-165 (11 full meet & 2 bench only)
Flight E - Men 181 (12 full meet & 2 bench only)

Platform 2
Flight F - Men 198 Collegiate Only (11 full meet)
Flight G - Men 198 All but Collegiate (9 full meet & 3 bench only)
Flight H - Men 220 (15 full meet)
Flight I - Men 242 (12 full meet & 2 bench only)
Flight J - Men 275 - SHW (10 full meet)
These are tentative assignments! They could change if enough people change weight classes. Stay Strong! Kim

October 31, 2007 - early afternoon.
I am officially closing down acceptance of entries for the Longhorn Open! Unless, I have talked with you and told you to send in the entry form (meaning I have your name and info already) I can't accept anymore entries. If I receive all the entries from those I have heard from then we are well over 120 full-meet lifters. Sorry. Stay Strong! Kim

October 31, 2007
The postmark deadline is here and the Longhorn Open lifter count is up to 121 total lifters (6 are Bench Only so there is still some wiggle room). I have received individual entries from Trey Gully (M-O&BOO-198), Art Menton (M-M6-165), Johnny Vasquez (M-O-181), Brian Warren (M-O-165), Matt Jackson (M-O-242), Andrew Beckman (M-T1-123), Cameron Anderson (M-O-242), Raul Reyna (M-C-242), Brian Ficklin (M-BOO-198), Joe Lucio (M-M5-198), Chris Cruz (M-T3-198), Ben Villarreal (M-T2-148), Victor Gutierrez (M-T2-123), and Meagan Pollack (F-O-165). October 25, 2007
The Longhorn Open lifter count is up to 105 lifters. The Fort Hood Phantom Warriors are bringing 10 lifters and the Texas A&M University is bringing 28 lifters! Wow! They are doing something right to promote powerlifting at the collegiate level. I have also received individual entries from Trey Jewett (M-C-198), Caleb Messimer (M-T2-114), and Josh Norton (M-RawT2-148). I have been talking with folks on the phone and several entries are supposed to be on the way, so our count is probably closer to 110-115. I may have to cut off entries by early next week. I hate to do it, but... Stay Strong! Kim

October 22, 2007
The Longhorn Open lifter count is up to 61 lifters. The University of Texas-San Antonio is bringing 9 lifters (so far!) John King (M-O-275), Shawn Baker (M-O & M1-275), and Alvah Cass (M-M4) round out the list this round. Get those entries in! Stay Strong! Kim

Get those entries in! The postmark deadline is October 31, but I am keeping a close eye on the lifter limit number I posted on the entries (due to facility and personnel issues). Stay Strong! Kim

October 11, 2007
I fixed the link from this page to the entry form. It is also listed under "Upcoming Events" in case this one acts up again. In addition to the entries below I know that Edna High School is bringing 15 lifters so our number is up to 26 lifters. Get those entries in! The paper copies should go out in UT's mail today. Stay Strong! Kim

October 8, 2007

September 13, 2007
Longhorn Open entries are ready! We received the "thumbs up" from our facilities folks here on campus and I put the sanction in the mail today so we should be good to go. Remember, due to facility management issue we have to limit the number of lifters entering the Longhorn Open so get your entries in early. Paper copies of the entry will go out in a few weeks once we get the mailing labels from the national office. We are always looking for referees and good spotters/loaders so give me a call if you would like to volunteer. We are offering a "Raw/Unequipped" division this year. The lifters in this division must have a one-piece, nonsupportive suit and can only use a belt and wrist wraps. Otherwise all other rules are the same. I have to run off to class so I'll sign off for now. Stay Strong! Kim

July 5, 2007
Summer Powerfest!! I have signed Tony Cardella's paperwork and he has sent me his entry form so it sounds official! I have posted two versions of the entry form in the Upcoming Events page, or you can click one of the following: Word (doc) or Adobe Acrobat (pdf). Tony has had to limit the number of lifters allowed to 40 so get your entries in early - 1st come, 1st served! He is also calling for spotters/loaders and referees interested in helping with the meet. All of you USAPL State Referees this is a good chance to work on your referee credentials and skills. Send Tony an e-mail or give him a buzz. Check the entry form for contact information. Stay Strong! Kim

May 17, 2007
Part II - Oops! I forgot to mention that Tony Cardella is working on the details of hosting a meet in the Houston area on August 18. It is not official, meaning he hasn't submitted his paperwork yet, but he told me he is going to do it, so everyone can start planning. As soon as he submits the paperwork and an entry form I'll get it posted. Stay Strong! Kim

May 17, 2007
Bench Press Only Records!! If you haven't noticed, I managed to get the "Bench Only" records online about a month ago. I included the record on the regular records pages after the "Total" record. If your weight class/age group/division does not have the designation listed it means that I didn't find any records for it. I went through all the results documents (mainly the various local meets) I had on file back to 2001 or 2000. I did not go through back issues of Powerlifting USA for published competitions, I never received results from some meet directors, and I might have just plain missed some. Therefore, if you want to get credit for a particular lift that is not on the website yet, just e-mail me with the details (when, where, what) and I'll try to hunt up the results to verify it. If you know where the results were published the verification process will go much faster:) The IPF has just passed a rule (mainly for national and world records, but we can also use at the local level) that if a lifter in a 3-lift meet surpasses the single-lift bench record, the 3-lift meet bench result could stand for the single-lift record, but not vice-versa (the bench-only competitor cannot set the 3-lift meet record.) I'll follow this new rule from this year forward but I won't backtrack into previous years. We'll use the same record application/notification form for the bench-only records as we do for the rest of the records.

On another note, the USAPL Texas State Meet is in a couple of weeks. This is also a State Chairperson election year so I need to know who is interested in running for the position. I'll keep my name in the hat and so far, I have heard that Tom North has expressed interest. Please e-mail me and let me know if you are interested so that the election ballots I print up will have your name on it. See you in San Antonio in a few weeks!

March 20, 2007
It is official! The USAPL Texas State Meet will be in San Antonio this year. Willie Mastin's entry form is online under the "Coming Events" link. The Texas A&M Invitational went well and had approximately 45-50 lifters. Not bad for their first meet in a long, long time! I have listed their meet results as well as the results from a last minute, qualifier meet directed by Coach Hector Munoz in Port Lavaca last week. There sure are a lot of strong high schoolers getting ready for the USAPL High School Nationals next week in Alexandria, LA! The USAPL Collegiate Nationals will be two weeks after that in Killeen, TX so everyone come down to say Hi! and see some awesome lifting done by our state's (and the nation's) strongest collegiate lifters.
Stay Strong! Kim

February 27, 2007
I finally received last year's results for the State Meet held in Killeen, TX. Check them out in the Results section.

February 11, 2007
I have confirmed the date for the USAPL Texas State Meet. Willie Mastin in San Antonio has agreed to host it on June 2. When he gets his paperwork to me I'll post it in the Coming Events section, so until then everyone start training and plan a trip to San Antonio!

February 7, 2007
I have posted the entry form for the Texas A&M Invitational in the Coming Events section. Their school is still tweaking their liability form, but at least you get the details of when, where, and contact info if needed.
I have also posted the results from Curt St. Romain's Toys for Tots meet he held in December 2006.
Stay Strong! Kim

February 1, 2007
The start of a new year and one month already gone! Texas A&M has finally made it official by turning in their paperwork - their powerlifting meet is on March 3. As soon as they turn in a copy of their entry form I'll get it posted.
